NYCDDC SANDRO4 – Resident Engineering Inspection Services Beach 108th Street Streetscape Improvements

This $16 million NYCDDC capital construction project was part of a community-led process sponsored by the NY Rising Program. This project was vital to alleviate flooding in the area, add more parking spots, and improve the streetscape to make it safer, more accessible, and more reslient for residents and visitors. The project also served to modernize and beautify the area and improve infrastructure for pedestrians and bikers.

Construction on this project was extensive and involved replacement of storm sewers and catch basins. A mile of old concrete curbs were replaced along with adjacent sidewalks and 18,000 square yards of asphalt were laid down. 6,000 feet of old water mains were replaced and two new fire hydrants were added. A new 1,600-foot-long median was installed with two-way, grade separated bike paths, 58 new trees, and new park benches.

As Community Liaison, Ota Ade Oni interacted with Queens Community Board 14 in order to alleviate the burden of intrusive construction on the surrounding community. This outreach involved posting notices, providing schedules, alerting businesses and residents of changes to the construction envelope, and communication with stakeholders to establish progress and address any community needs.
