NYCDDC BB0502A, Construction of Various Right of Way Green Infrastructure
North Queens, New York
This $12.6 million NYCDDC construction project was established to improve stormwater runoff combining with sewage during heavy rains. The constructed rain gardens capture stormwater runoff, vastly reducing the likelihood of overflowing.
The project included installation of new bioswales, greenstrips, infiltration basins and stormwater greenstreets. Construction involved excavation, backfill of broken stone and engineered soil, placement of concrete inlets and outlets, concrete curbs and headers, sidewalk and landscaping in several areas.
Ota Ade Oni provided Community Outreach Services for the project. Construction necessitated disruption of utilities and street closures, and the Community Construction Liaison was responsible for providing information to the community and assisting residents in mitigating disruption as much as possible. They were also responsible for alerting the surrounding community when construction conditions would be likely to create elevated levels of air or noise pollution, and provide instructions on how to properly dispose of trash during times where roads were inaccessible.
