NYCDDC Borough-Based Jail Program
New York City (Citywide), New York
New York is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative to reduce incarceration rates by shutting down Rikers Island and establishing a more compact network of safer, contemporary jails. BBJP is developing a series of four updated, more compassionate jail facilities across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. These new facilities will prioritize safety and well-being for both inmates and staff, offering ample space for quality education, healthcare, and therapeutic programs. Additionally, modernized facilities have the potential to spark positive transformations within the community and the broader justice system. New York City envisions its jails as valuable civic assets that will enhance the lives of detainees and staff, facilitate smoother reintegration into society, and serve as valuable resources for the community.
